Governor’s Message: August 2018
By Craig Gillis, District Governor 2018-19
As I begin Week 5 of Club Visits... I am reminded of how fortunate I am to have a role that enables me to immerse myself in the culture of so many of our clubs.   This is such a welcoming and inclusive Rotary District. I urge Rotarians to take advantage of opportunities to visit other clubs. So often you will see different routines, practices and traditions – each example deepens our appreciation of the many and varied ways in which we carry out the service of Rotary. There is much ‘wise practice’ within Rotary District 5020.   We have much to learn from and teach one another!

Get to know... Breane Martinez
If ever there was a juggling act to behold, it is in Kingston, Washington, where master magician and local Rotary club president Breane Martinez practices.  Family.  Career.  Community.  Shuffle.  Career.  Family.  Community.  Shuffle.  She keeps all three plates spinning on their sticks, not losing a one to the concrete below.
Get to know... Each other!
As we move into our new year in Rotary we can choose to be revitalized and inspired!
Over the next 11 months we'd love to feature some of the amazing stories of members within District 5020. How were you first introduced to Rotary? How has it impacted your life? What were your biggest surprises in getting involved with Rotary?
Please make sure to mention;
- which club you are a member of
- when you joined Rotary
- a photo of yourself or something important about your Rotary involvement
The Power of Partnerships
Rotary offers opportunities where partnering multiplies the impact of a Rotary Grant.  A vivid example of the benefits of partnering is a partnership between District 5020 and District 5030 to enhance STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education in Kenya.

Putting the District Governor to Work
One Monday, July 16th the Rotary Club of Duncan had the pleasure of having our official visit by DG Craig Gillis.  But President Doyle Childs put him to work!  DG Craig was more than happy to roll up his sleeves and help our club with our work party, painting a building for the Cowichan Green Community at their Seed Incubation Farm in Duncan.

Supporting the Community of Victoria
Recently the Rotary Club of Victoria-Harbourside wrote checks to community groups totaling roughly $96,000. Every year the club asks for submissions from the community looking for funding.  At a regular meeting the groups were invited for breakfast and checks were handed out.

Raise the Paddle, Rotary Club of Tacoma #8
At the April 28 Annual Auction for the Rotary Club of Tacoma #8, the 'Raise the Paddle' was done for donating to building a Habitat for Humanity house for the Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity.

Fundraising: Chili Cook-Off in Victoria, BC
Fundraising is a significant portion of what we do as Rotarians, and it comes with it's own set of rewards and challenges. Club members have an opportunity to try new things, interact with the public, connect with each other in fellowship and more. How do we keep longevity in our campaigns? How do we respect our member's time by simplifying laborious tasks? How we do adapt our campaigns for new technologies?
